Today I’m gonna share with you some information about Indonesian traditional ikat Weaving, which I think is one of the works of art.
Each patterns, motif and shape are vary from one region to another and each pattern has a specific meaning, which I find very interesting. The designs could represent animals, birds, floral, geometric or ancestral figure motifs.
Ikat (means “to tie” in Indonesian Language) is a style of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process similar to tie-dye to create a pattern or design.
Today many decorations item made using Ikat weaving, such as Wall decoration, Cushion, Bed Runner, Carpet, Placemat, etc.

West Papua (formerly Irian Jaya) is one of the most primitive regions on earth. There are hundreds of tribes living here, and some of the Tribes remains untouched by the outside world.
The Asmat tribe, they are known for the quality of their wood sculptures. Each carving is in a unique pattern and they do not produce the same pattern carved on a large scale. So, if you have one of Asmat carvings with a certain pattern, than it is the only one existing.
You should be very careful when buying Asmat carvings, there are many people who forged their carvings.
Here I embed some video of them, which I found from youtube.
The Asmat, infamous for their former headhunting and ritual cannibalism. It was a long time ago anyway, today it is safe to go to their village.
I haven’t been there myself even though I am Indonesian, but it will be on my next list of travel for sure.
